Today I learned that I must follow my dream and fulfill my destiny because this is my only obligation.
The Alchemist is a book of inspiration and truth. Within it you will find that the purpose of ones’ life is, “To realize [that] one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation” (Coelho). Paulo Coelho, author of The Alchemist, leads the reader through a wonderful journey along the side of a shepherd boy. As the story progresses the boy finds himself conflicted with the decision of having “to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have” (Coelho, 27). The boy then takes a leap of faith and makes the fateful decision of pursuing his own Personal Legend and leaving what he has always known in order to do this.
The boy decides to travel to the Pyramids of Egypt in search of his “treasure.” Along the way, he is met with a King, a merchant, an Englishman, and an alchemist. Throughout his journey he comes to understand the Language of the World. Within his search of the treasure he is continuously reminded that he must “Never stop dreaming” and that it is vital to come to understand ones heart and always follow it (Coelho, 62). A young girl, Fatima, teaches the boy the true meaning of love and that “One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving” (Coelho, 122).
The boy discovers that because of his courage he is cable of pursuing his Personal Legend and that this makes him lucky and different from many other people. Most people view the world as being a dangerous and threatening place and this is why they never achieve their Personal Legend. If one is not afraid to dream and realizes that they are worthy of achieving greatness, only then will these individuals be able to find true happiness, because they have pursued their own Personal Legend.
At the end of The Alchemist, the boy comes to the conclusion that after traveling all the way from Spain to the Egyptian Pyramids, his treasure lies right where he started. His treasure lies buried under the root of a sycamore in front of a small abandoned church. All this time the boy had been searching for something that was right were he was in the beginning, in Spain. But he knew that without the journey across the torturous dessert he would have never gotten to know the beauty of his own Personal Journey or love.
The Alchemist is an inspiring book that everyone should read. It is inevitable to self reflect while reading through these wondrous pages. What I realized throughout reading the book is that one must not be afraid to follow their dreams, or Personal Legend. It is necessary to listen to your heart and to thrive for that which you have always dreamed of and you must not be afraid to do so. It is vital that once you have finally reached your goal you also come to accept your achievement. Do not be afraid to accept that you have succeeded because you are worthy of what you have worked so vigorously for. However, it is not only the achievement that you should come to accept, but it is the fact that you are deserving of what you want and have. When you see ourselves worthy of our accomplishment then all becomes clear and you “become an instrument of God, you help the Soul of the World, and you understand why you are here” (Coelho).
